About Pete Rock
Pete Rock is arguably one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time. Editors from About.com has ranked Pete Rock as #2 in their “Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers” list. He recently collaborated on tracks for Kanye West, Method Man & Redman & Lady Gaga. He also worked with A-List artists ranging from Madonna, Biggie Smalls, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, and A Tribe Called Quest.
The Bronx native first started out as a DJ with Marley Marl on a New York radio show. In 1991 he joined forces with emcee CL Smooth to create one of hip-hop’s greatest duos of all time. They went on to release classics including “Mecca and the Soul Brother.” The two spilt in ’95 due to creative differences.
Pete Rock went on to have a critically acclaimed solo career. He released his solo debut “Soul Survivor” in 1998 and followed that up with “Soul Survior II” in 2004 and “NY’s Finest” in 2008. Pete Rock also a talented emcee enlisted a wide range of rappers to assist him on his solo work including Kurupt, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, Talib Kweli, The Lox and more.
Pete Rock helped establish the hip-hop producer as a solo act. Being one of the first to build on his name as an artist through releasing solo albums and instrumental albums.
Aside from his own releases Pete Rock cemented himself as one of the greatest hip-hop producers by producing on other artist’s albums creating classics tracks with Nas, Big L, Common, Redman, Run DMC, Heavy D & The Boyz and many more.
Recently Pete Rock joined forces with Brooklyn duo Smif N Wessun for a “Monumental” album. Pete Rock provided the entire production on the album, as well as vocals on several key tracks including the title track, Monumental. The album features Bun B, Raekwon, Styles P, Sean Price, Buckshot, Black Rob, Freeway, Memphis Bleek and more. The album was released in 2011 through Duck Down Music Inc. and has been received well by fans & critics following suit with previous Pete Rock releases.
