Artist Spotlight: The Underachievers & T'Nah Apex

10/16/2013 - 8:22am

Our CMJ show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn goes down tonight! Talib Kweli, Smif N Wessun, Sean Price, Black Moon, Res and Cory Mo will all be performing but as always we like to showcase the up and coming talent on the bill. So check out music from The Underachievers & T'Nah Apex below and if you're in BK we hope to see you tonight at the show.

The Underachievers:

"Herb Shuttles" off their 'Indigoism' mixtape (download)

The Underachievers splashed onto the scene last year with their video for "Herb Shuttles" and haven't let up since. It eventually led to them signing with Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label, hopefully we can hear them on some FlyLo beats soon. The duo comprised of Issa Dash and AK balance each other so well and their raw/edgy rhymes are perfect for elevating your high or your mind. They're apart of the Beast Coast collective along with Flatbush Zombies & Pro Era, easily one of the most talented collectives to come out of NYC in awhile.

They also have a special knack for picking beats, from the more psychedelic type shit on "Herb Shuttles" to the sampled based "N.A.S.A." which is off their new tape, 'The Lords of Flatbush.' Basically The Underachievers are one of the groups you mention when someone ignorant fool says hip-hop is dead.

T'Nah Apex:

Unfortunately there isn't much music released yet from the young MC/singer but all it will take is one project or music video for her name to buzz around the hip-hop world. Right away people will make the Lauryn Hill comparison but that's only cause there has been a definite void for talented singer/rappers. They often excel at rapping or singing but T'Nah's skill in both puts her in a special class.

Also hailing from BK, T'nah has appeared on many Pro Era tracks, most notably on Joey Bada$$'s debut tape '1999.' She held her own lyrically on the posse cut "Suspect" and showcased her vocal skill by doing the hook for "Snakes":

Children of the Night and F. Stokes will also be performing, check our spotlight on them from earlier in the year to catch up on their music.

Tickets to the show are available at Ticketmaster.com
