Founded on the grounds of Ivy league school University of Pennsylvania, 2008 was a big year for hip-hop alternative duo Kidz In The Hall. Duck Down Music & 2K Sports Announce NBA 2K11 Soundtrack Contest:
March 8th, 2010 - Win Your Way Onto the NBA 2K11 Soundtrack + The Stage At Duck Down's Fall CMJ Showcase in NYC



Duck Down Music and 2K Sports have partnered to present an exciting contest for all aspiring producers and MCs to create unique and original music, along with the special opportunity to have their song included in the upcoming soundtrack for NBA 2K11, the next iteration of the hugely popular NBA 2K series.

Phase 1: NBA 2K11 Producer Contest
Starting today, March 8th, producers will have two weeks to create one sample-free instrumental.

All submissions must be sent to nba2k11@duckdown.com by March 22nd.

Producers are also encouraged to record video of their beat making process, which can be included with their final submission.

The top ten instrumentals will be selected by Duck Down Music A&R and representatives from 2K Sports. Each instrumental will also be streamed online via a link at www.XXLMag.com, as fans will have the chance to vote for their favorite track. The winner will be announced on April 5th.

Phase 2: NBA 2K11 MC Contest
Starting on April 6th, MC's will have four weeks to submit one clean track using the winning producer's instrumental.

All submissions must be sent to nba2k11@duckdown.com by May 4th. After the top ten songs are determined by Duck Down Music and 2K Sports, they will again be posted via a link on www.XXLMag.com for fans to hear the tracks. The winner will be announced on May 11th.

The grand prize winners of the contest, which will consist of one producer and one MC, will:
• Have their song placed in the music soundtrack for NBA 2K11.
• Receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City, where they will have the special opportunity to perform the song live at Duck Down's CMJ Showcase in October 2010.

It's their third (and best) album, providing a platform for the hard-working rap twosome to stretch their legs stylistically like never before. So it makes perfect sense that they enlisted another duo, Nick Catchdubs and Proper Villains, to transform single "Flickin" into a banging dance track. February 11th, 2010 - When all else fails, listening to old records and watching garbage TV always somehow provides refuge from the songwriting rut. Here's an example.

One, I was bumping some old Sade in anticipation of her new Soldier of Love album. Two, I was flipping channels during halftime of a UW basketball game and landed on Fox News, where Michelle Malkin was back at it doing what she do. Spewing the same ol same: Tea Party this, moonbats that. But for the first time in my life, I agreed with her on something: you rappers need to go get a job!

As fate would have it, Sade's "Feel No Pain" (Love Deluxe, 1992) has a vocal sample with her singing the line "get a job." What are the chances? So I flipped the beat, sampled the vocals, and wrote this song about my favorite neo-conservative Filipina blogger. And what better timing to share it with you all than the week that Sade's new album drops?

I wish all songs came this easily. Don't you miss when overt racists were in power? Enjoy.

Examining the current climate of our world today, LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE, is a timely reminder for us all to take a step back and analyze how we can strive to be better and achieve more. Double-O highlights this further by saying that "The Land of Make Believe is different things for different people. The first single from the album, "FLICKIN", currently available at iTunes worldwide, is a prime example of dichotomy of imagination and reality. The title is a colloquial Chicago term. Naledge explains "Flickin'" is the idea that at any point in time something is photo-ready or picturesque. When I was younger it was used to describe a person's car, shoes, haircut, or outfit. Any material possession with physical beauty.” "Confidence is key" Double-0 adds, "The song should make you feel good when you look in the mirror regardless of what you have on."

Kidz In The Hall have recently unveiled the second single, “JUKEBOX” featuring MC Lyte. The video, directed by BB GUN, will be impacting National Video Networks in early February. The group had the opportunity to perform the track and other key songs in front of MTV’s entire staff.

Just last year Kidz In The Hall released their critically acclaimed album, The In Crowd, (May 2008) which propelled them into the limelight with key tracks like "DRIVING DOWN THE BLOCK," and "LOVE HANGOVER" featuring Estelle. With tremendous support from national video networks the videos for these songs were placed in heavy rotation and even highlighted on shows such as MTV's TRL and BET's 106 & Park.

Kidz In The Hall went on to land exciting licensing deals with their music featured in EA Sports Madden 09, Rockstar Game's Midnight Club LA, Activision's Pimp My Ride 2 and EA Sports upcoming game NBA LIVE 2010.

The group remained active touring both North America and Europe, performing with the likes of Method Man & Redman, Gym Class Heroes, Atmosphere, The Clipse, MURS, and as a part of Rock The Bells and Paid Dues Tours.

It was this heavy activity that caught the attention of REEBOK, who enlisted Kidz In The Hall to be the first group representing their GLOBAL REEBOK CLASSICS CAMPAIGN. Kidz In The Hall remixed Special Ed’s “I GOT IT MADE,” filmed a video for the track, and were featured in over 500 Foot Locker Locations.

December 16th, 2009 - In the hiatus of Heltah Skeltah, like the whole Boot Camp Clik in the mid '00s, Ruck was forced into adjustment. Rather than attempt a glorified case of re-invention, he stripped all the layers away and delivered an almost apathetic album that, like Madvillain, celebrated its rough draft status. Using his government name and beats from North Carolina, Price's lyricism came alive, as his intricate wordplay and self-deprication made an album that challenged his family, his label, his bank account and himself. Sean took the age-old question of "if I wasn't rapping, what would I be doing?" and scared fans by becoming the face of gully. Timberland boots still in tact, with a plate of rice and chicken wings, this album paved the way for a tangible style embraced by many new rappers to come. This release was the centerpiece of Duck Down Records' 2005 "triple-threat" and their overall revival. Ruck proved he didn't need Rock to be a towering emcee in the game, and turned his entire career around in an album that he initially swore would be his depature from the craft he mastered 10 times over.

November 25th, 2009 - In an continued effort to craft the ideal independent record model, Duck Down Music has inked a direct deal with iTunes for Digital Distribution of its complete catalog of music.

Duck Down now has the ability to easily control and manage its content through the iTunes Producer software, as well as receive up-to-the-day statistics on how content is performing.

The first two albums under the direct deal were the recent titles from KRS-ONE & BUCKSHOT (Survival Skills) and Skyzoo (The Salvation). Recently Duck Down re-uploaded back catalog from artists on the roster, including Sean Price, Smif N Wessun, 9th Wonder & Buckshot, Boot Camp Clik, Black Moon and more, so these artist's older releases are being handled direct from Duck Down to iTunes without the use of an aggregator.

Drew (Dru Ha) Friedman had this to say about the deal, "We view our direct deal with iTunes as a true achievement. While many Indies may have secured direct deals in the past, with the abundance of music on iTunes it has become increasingly difficult to be accepted as a direct partner. October 28th, 2009 - At 7PM on Saturday evening the rain belted down on the streets of NYC. The Yankee game was canceled, people were running for shelter under canopies and those inside their homes, comfortable on their couches, were quickly making phone calls to push back prior made reservations. People ask me why I care about making a mix of Hawaiian tunes. I tell them that it's because I'm from Seattle.

I don't think I can apply the word "foreign" to any cultural elements that have infuenced me in becoming the person I am today.

Through years of, um, "nourishment" from grinds, to listening to Jawaiian tunes as a teenager, to starting a group with a military kid from Honolulu, to learning the meaning of "false crack" the hard way (ha!)... the spirit of Hawaii has long maintained a notable presence in my life.

And while I'm not Hawaiian, nor do I claim to be a local boy, I acknowledge and am thankful for the role that the Islands have played in the development of my cultural identity.

For me, a big part of the OOF! EP project was to experiment with a new way of identifying who we are and where we come from. It was an exercise in global cultural expression. Perhaps this is the age we can start believing that "where we are from" is anywhere that has influenced us in becoming who we are. And perhaps our brothers and sisters are simply those who want to share this belief with us.

Watch out tho. When you embrace this idea, you start to think that home can be everywhere and your people could be everyone.

August 24th, 2009 - The Blue Scholars are packing up their gear and PA and will be driving around Seattle for shows at secret locations on Tuesday August 25th prior to the ‘OHANA party. The only place to find out where is by following Blue Scholars on Twitter at @bluescholars

OOF! is a project featuring new music from Blue Scholars in collaboration with painter, vinyl toy & skate deck artist, Angry Woebots (www.armyofsnipers.com), who crafted a painting to go along with the lead track “HI-808” which was then turned into a special edition Art Print and t-shirt. The painting was created at the influential Hawaii based surf & skate boutique brand IN4MATION (www.in4mants.com). The cover for OOF! was designed by one of Hawaii's premier photographers and historian of all things dope, Aaron Yoshino (Honozooloo / 5 to Life - www.honozooloo.com). The video for Hi-808 was handled by The Island's premiere video production crew, Kai Media, who shot in and around Oahu (edited by Zia Mohajerjasbi) – and is currently the #1 Video at MTVU.com. All these groups have come together to create the OOF! Project which will be sold as a complete package online using Topsin Media widgets at Blue Scholars' and each project partners' websites, with the EP also being available separately at all digital retail outlets (iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, etc).

Along with its digital release, the OOF! EP will also be pressed into a limited-edition run of just 808 physical CDs which will be available exclusively from the Blue Scholars’ and other project partners’ websites, the O’Hana release party, Seattle Caffe Vita locations and at the IN4MATION Ward location in Honolulu, HI.

The whole project is part of Blue Scholars’ artist owned label MassLine, underwritten through a strategic marketing partnership with Seattle’s independent coffee company Caffe’ Vita, and marketed in collaboration with Duck Down Records.
